Abstract
A clinical study was performed on 600 cases of essential hypertension observed at Internal Medicine of Korea General Hospital, during a period of last 5 years from 1968 to 1973.
The followings were the results:
1. The annual incidence of hypertensive patients in all medical patients were 5.7% and it seemed to increase annually.
2. The highest occurrence was observed in sixth decade and accounted for 35.2% of all cases and the least occurrence was in third decade of life, which accounted for 1.1% of all cases. The male to female radio was 1.1 : 1.
3. The most outstanding symptom was headache, which was found in 52% of all cases. Dizziness and dyspnea were the next orders in frequency.
Headache, dyspnea and visual disturbance were found to be rather proportional to the blood pressure levels in incidence.
4. Albuminuria was detected in 47% with systolic blood pressure and in 46. 8% with diastolic blood pressure. The appearance of albuminuria seemed to have a close correlation with blood pressure levels. There was no correlation between positivities of albuminuria and bloodd pressure levels.
5. No correlation was found between the levels of serum cholesterol and blood pressure. The highest incidence of hypertension was observed in 150-200 mg% of serum cholesterol.
6. The abnormal retinal finding was found to be rather proportitional to blood pressure levels, Hypertensive retionpathy of K-W grade II was the most frequent finding among the Keith-Wagener grades.
7. The appearance of albuminuria seemed to have a close correlation with hypertensive retinal change.
8. Cerebrovascular accident, congestive heart failure myocardial infarction and renal failure were consisted of four major complications. The most outstanding complication was cerebrovascular accident which was found in 18.7% of all cases.
